The geometry of the pants complex

In this talk we will give an introduction to the pants complex of a surface and its geometry. We will study the extrinsic geometry of certain classes of subcomplexes of the pants complex, establishing a strong analogy with the geometry of the Weil-Petersson metric in Teichmuller space. Time permitting, we will discuss some applications and some of the techniques that come into play. This is joint work with Hugo Parlier (Geneva) and Ken Shackleton (Tokyo).
