Simple groups of homeomorphisms of 1-manifolds.

I will discuss some recent constructions of simple groups of homeomorphisms of 1-manifolds. A portion of the talk will focus on my recent construction (with Hyde) of finitely generated infinite simple groups of homeomorphisms of the real line. This answers a well known question of Rhemtulla from 1980 concerning the existence of such groups.
