New groups of automatic continuity

I'll present some recent results in automatic continuity. For example, every abstract group homomorphism from a completely metrizable topological group to Thompson's group F has open kernel. Some historical background and discussion of key ingredients in such arguments will be discussed. Joint work with Greg Conner.
