Stochastic simulation of extreme significant wave heights on the Atlantic coast based on multivariate Pareto modelling

This study focuses on extreme sea states in coastal areas. The approach used is the characterisation of the conditional probability law of significant wave heights (Hs) higher than a certain threshold given some sea state parameters (peak period and peak direction).
The data used are sea state parameters extracted from the HOMERE and IOWAGA hindcast databases (both provided by IFREMER) covering a period from 1994 to 2016, in the northern part of the Bay of Biscay (Golfe de Gascogne).
Using bivariate generalized Pareto distributions, we model the bivariate extremes between the Hs of an offshore grid point and those near the French coast corresponding to the SEM-REV sea test site. From this model, we are then able to simulate new extreme oceanographic conditions close to the coast.
