Partial Differential Equation Modeling of Tumor Microenvironment Heterogeneity
Intratumoral metabolic heterogeneity significantly influences tumor cell plasticity and their response to therapies, highlighting the need for realistic models of heterogeneous tumors. In this presentation, I will demonstrate how data can be utilized to develop 3D digital models of the tumor microenvironment. I will discuss mesoscale modeling approaches that lead to representations of tumor heterogeneity, focusing on high-dimensional PDE models structured in intracellular metabolic variables. These variables and PDE dimensions can, in principle, encompass the entire genome; however, in practice, their number is constrained through model reduction. Additionally, I will present several examples of such models applied to chemotherapy and targeted therapy, along with the numerical methods employed to compute their solutions.
