Generative AI in Mathematics Lesson Design: How Do Preservice Teachers Appropriate a New Resource?
How do preservice mathematics teachers use generative AI when designing and revising a lesson? This presentation draws on research with preservice mathematics teachers in China to examine how AI progressively becomes integrated into their resource systems and design work. Particular attention is paid to how they interact with AI, evaluate and transform its outputs, and coordinate them with other resources, including curriculum materials, textbooks, digital resources, and peer exchanges. The findings reveal substantially different forms of AI appropriation across preservice teachers and suggest that AI can be examined not simply as a tool, but as a resource whose uses are constructed through design activity. The presentation will conclude by discussing possibilities for comparative and collaborative research between China and France.
