Representations of surface groups and Higgs bundles

Using the theory of Higgs bundles, we study the moduli space of representations of the fundamental group of a compact real surface in a non-compact semisimple Lie group G. Special attention will be given to the case where G is the group of isometries of a Hermitian symmetric space of the non-compact type.
