Phylogeographic analysis of a densely sampled watermelon mosaic virus outbreak in the South of France. (Séminaire KIM)

Watermelon mosaic virus (WMV) is a single-stranded RNA virus of the Potyviridae family. It is a major pathogen of crops worldwide, infecting over 170 plant species, including cucurbits and certain legumes. We study the invasion dynamics of more virulent variants in the South of France, which completely replaced the dominant strain in the early 2000s. We find that at least four different introductions of these variants took place in the 1990s, followed by rapid spread along agricultural landscapes dominated by its host species. These results are complementary to those obtained by (Papaïx et al. 2021) using spatiotemporal incidence data.

During the seminar, I will present the general framework of phylodynamic inference, as well as the continuous phylogeographic methods introduced by Lemey and Pybus. I will outline some of the challenges faced by the field in the coming years, especially in the context of genomic data on a massive scale.

Based on joint work with Cécile Desbiez (INRAE Pathologie Végétale, Avignon).
